World's Most Popular Cakes

By

Photo: podcast.ukma.kiev.ua

Cakes are probably one of the best inventions in the world. Perhaps the best invention since sliced bread - and not before because many cakes are reliant on bread for their mixture. There are countless different types of cakes and they are perfect for a range of different situations and to celebrate a range of different special occasions. It's not coincidence that it's traditional to enjoy cake on a birthday or at Christmas - it's because this is one of the most enjoyable and decadent ways to eat for a special occasion. Cakes are the bane of dieters and while many people have difficulty giving up their chocolate and alcohol, it's often the cakes that they really can't stop cheating with and that they find themselves constantly steeling slices of.
There are also many different kinds of cake and different people will have different favorites. There is no one who doesn't like cakes, because there are so many different kinds of cakes that you will be sure to like at least one of them.
Being able to supply cakes is something that everyone needs to be able to do to make a good host. If you want to make someone feel happy and comfortable in your home then offering them cakes is ideal. It's the perfect desert for after dinner and is expected to a degree, and if you don't offer a cake many people will be disappointed. Finally you need to be able to offer cakes on birthdays and Christmases and if you're a parent this is especially important.
To offer the most popular cakes you need to find either the best cakes manufacturer in your area, or you need to learn to make them. You also need to know which cakes are the most popular ones that you are likely to have the most luck with. Here are some of the world's most popular cakes to help you choose.
Chocolate Cake: This is the truly indulgent cake for those who aren't watching their weight. The combination of chocolate, sponge and icing is one that is hard to resist and just the texture of the creamy chocolate on the top and in the filling is enough to make most grown adults drool.
Sponge Cake: Sponge cake is light and sweet and this makes it perfect comfort food that doesn't leave you feeling very stuffed and heavy. It also goes perfectly with custard, and can form the basis of many other kinds of cake.
Apple Crumble: Many people like apple crumble because it allows them to believe that they are getting one of their five a day (though it's nice, attempts to convince yourself that apple cakes are healthy are somewhat futile). While this isn't true however it's certainly healthier than a lot of other cakes and it is also sweet in the natural and delicious way that apples are.
Carrot Cake: Many people are confused by the fact that a cake can contain carrot - a vegetable - and still be tasty. Actually though this contrast works perfectly and you'll find that it is completely delicious and something a bit different and not quite as sickly as many other cakes.
One thing I don't often look forwad to is birthday cakes that look good but don't taste yummy. I think the taste is more important, even when it comes to wedding cakes.

Salmon Sushi

By

Photo: healthyjunkie.files.wordpress.com

Salmon sushi is becoming more common. Sushi itself has become increasing popular in the United States within the past thirty years. It's decorative design and array of possible ingredients makes it a benefit to any party. The number of ingredients that can be used in sushi is practically endless, however, salmon is a very popular ingredient and for many good reasons.
Sushi is in itself a nutritious food choice. It is low in artificial substances and low in sugars. Sushi can be made with different flavorful and nutritious vegetables and fishes adding to its appeal. Salmon is a good addition for sushi because it is highly nutritious even by itself.
Studies have shown that salmon is high in Vitamin D. This is very important especially during the winter months when the sun is not around to give its high amount of required vitamin D. Salmon is also high in Magnesium and Selenium and, of course, Omega 3 vitamins and minerals. An added benefit of eating salmon is that it is low in Mercury.
Sushi lovers often choose salmon for its taste. Salmon, with its light pink color, is not a heavy fish. It doesn't smell fishy or taste heavy. It is soft and light and delicate. There are also many versions of salmon a person can use for their sushi. Fresh salmon is, of course, an excellent choice, however it is good not to overlook the benefits of smoked salmon or canned salmon as well.
There are many ways you can eat salmon with your sushi. You can add salmon to your basic sushi ingredients of flavored rice and nori by adding the salmon in the sushi roll. You can also add in other vegetables to the roll. Popular vegetables include sliced cucumbers or carrots. Another option would be avocado and salmon rolls. Probably the most popular choice would be salmon and cream cheese sushi rolls. The combination is endless. Whatever you like with salmon, can be rolled into sushi.
Another option for salmon sushi it to mix tiny pieces of smoked salmon into the prepared rice and vinegar and roll it with the nori wrap. This is simple and mixes the flavors of the salmon and rice very well. It is a particularly good choice for those who really do not like to eat much fish, but know they should because the flavors are more subtle in the salmon and rice mixture.
If you love the taste of salmon, just placing a square of fresh raw salmon over a ball of rice mixture and covered with a small bit of nori can be a perfect appetizer. Sushi salmon is a tasteful treat for any sushi lover. Just remember to follow all safety guidelines for serving raw fish.
Alan Stables is a fan of sushi. Sometimes he likes to buy all the sushi ingredients himself to make his speciality, salmon sushi , and other times Alan is quite happy to get a sushi takeaway. Either way Alan just loves the world of sushi.

Old Fashion Salads Add Pizazz to Modern Meals!

By

Photo: images.eversave.com

Salads can be great as a meal or as a side to a meal. These old fashion salad recipes include recipes for salads using Veggies, Tuna, and Fruit. There is bound to be one you and your family will love! Let's start out with the Tangy Vegetable Salad which is one of my favorites. Since I am a gal who loves her vegetables, this has been one of my favorite salads for many years. I think one of the reasons I love vegetables so much is because I was raised in the country where we grew most of our vegetables. I loved helping plant the seeds, watching the plants grow, and waiting with great anticipation to enjoying the vegetables when they were ready. I also loved helping my mother and grandmother can the vegetables then enjoying them on cold snowy days in the wintertime. I believe my love of vegetables was planted early and I know it runs deep. Now that I am a diabetic, I have changed the sugar in this recipe to Splenda granulated. It is still just as good. However, I am printing my original version here for you. Personally, I do not like tuna but my family does. I like this Veggie Tuna Salad recipe because it gets them to eat their vegetables, too! The Pretty Peach Salad makes a great addition to a buffet table or to a salad bar.
TANGY VEGETABLE SALAD
1 can baby peas
1 can Shoe Peg corn
1 can French-cut green beans
1/2 cup chopped celery
1 chopped onion
1 bell pepper, chopped
1/4 cup oil
1/4 cup vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
Drain all the canned vegetables then mix all the ingredients together in a bowl with a lid. Place lid on bowl and refrigerate several hours or overnight.
This makes a great 'make ahead' dish for busy cooks.
VEGGIE TUNA SALAD
1 can (6.5-oz) tuna, drained
1 cup shredded carrots
1 cup diced celery
1/4 cup minced onion
1 cup mayonnaise
1 can (4-oz) shoestring potatoes
In a large bowl use a fork to flake the tuna. Add the carrots, celery, onion, and mayonnaise; toss until the tuna is coated thoroughly with mayonnaise. Place in a bowl with a lid, cover, and refrigerate. Just before serving time, remove from the refrigerator and fold in the potatoes.
Serves 4 to 6
PRETTY PEACH SALAD
4 fresh or canned (drained) peach halves
2/3 cup cottage cheese
2 tbsp toasted slivered almonds
2 tbsp drained and chopped maraschino cherries
4 tbsp flaked coconut
crisp salad greens for lining plate
In a medium bowl, mix the cottage cheese, almonds, and maraschino cherries until combined. Arrange the peach halves, centers up, on a salad greens lined plate. Divide the cottage cheese mixture evenly and fill the centers of the pears. Sprinkle the coconut over the top.
NOTE: If using fresh peaches, dip in lemon juice or sprinkle with fruit fresh to keep them from turning dark.
Also, this same recipe works great using pears instead of peaches.
Enjoy!

How To Make Fresh Homemade Kefir

By

Photo: 3.bp.blogspot.com

Kefir is a fermented type of milk that is similar to the consistency of grocery store yogurt drinks. I often refer to it as a delicious drinkable yogurt beverage. They have lots of healthy flora and probiotics that have numerous health benefits.
Kefir is great in smoothies, poured over cereal or used in place of cream for deserts, coffee and tea.
The kefir "grains" are live active cultures consisting of yeast and bacteria and are called grains mainly because of their appearance. Kefir grains can be bought online or at some health food stores
So here is a delicious recipe that you can make at home.
Ingredients:
1 tbsp kefir grains
1 quart whole or 2% milk
Procedure:
1. Add the kefir grains and milk in a glass jar and fill it up to the top.
2. Cover with a clean cloth and elastic band and then set it aside in your cupboard or your kitchen counter.
3. Wait 1 to 2 days; stirring periodically with a plastic spoon (this is important because metal damages the cultures).
4. When thick, strain out the kefir grains with a plastic strainer (do your best to keep the grains intact), pour back into a clean jar and place in the fridge or repeat the process again. You can use these same grains because they will continue to remain active.
How to make coconut kefir
Coconut kefir is also a very tasty alternative. Unlike kefir made from cows' milk, coconut milk kefir doesn't have a strong fermented or sour flavor. It is nice and tangy with the naturally sweet taste of coconuts.
The texture is rich and smooth and is also slightly thinner in consistency than yogurt. Both the flavor and texture of fresh homemade kefir is in my opinion a lot better than any store-bought coconut milk kefir.
Use the same recipe as described above but change the ingredients so that instead of using one quart of milk, use two cans of coconut milk.
Also, make sure to re-hydrate your kefir grains in milk for 5 to 7 days at room temperature before making coconut kefir.
If the kefir grains are dehydrated, as they are from most online sources, you must make sure to first re-hydrate them in cows' milk.
Combine the grains with 1 cup of cows' milk and set out at room temperature in a loosely covered glass container for 5 to 7 days. Then strain the grains out each day and place them in a fresh cup of milk.
When the batches of milk take and smell slightly fermented and are thick, your grains are ready.

Russian Soup A Rich History Of The Country's Culture

By:

Photo: russianseason.net

Russian soup is the main staple in the diet of people every day. It's not unlike any other culture in the world. It always has been such an important part of daily meals and the variety of different types to choose from is really extraordinary.

There are many categories of Russian soup that are hot and cold.

Cabbage based soups such as the shchi
Mushroom, milk and meat noodle soups
Vegetable and water based stews
Soups that are chilled such as tyurya, kvass, botvinya, and okroshka
Vegetable and grain type soups
Ukha fish soup as well as many other kinds that include different types of fish

Hot Russian soup

One of the principle hot soups that are usually served for the first course in most Russian meals for more than 1000 years is cabbage or Shchi soup. This is one of the soups that is not exclusive to any class of people. It doesn't matter if someone is rich or poor; Shchi is a tradition and choice of mostly all Russian people. It is usually eaten at all times of the year. In addition, rye bread is often eaten along with almost any kind of soup that is served.

Other soups served hot are:

Rassolnik

This is a soup served hot that has a sour and salty cucumber base. Interestingly, this isn't an old traditional recipe. It was made in the 19th century. The name originates from rassol, which in Russian means pickle water. It can be served either vegetarian style, but quite often beef, kidneys or veal are added to the pickle base along with potatoes, vegetables and barley to balance the sour taste.

Solyanka

This is a thicker soup that adds cabbage, smetana, rassolink, spices and other vegetables like lemons, tomatoes, capers, olives, pickled and salted mushrooms to produce a very salty and sour soup base.

Cold Russian soup

One of the popular types that are eaten cold with sour milk or kvass is Okroshka. The principle ingredients with both of these soup types are vegetables combined with cold meats or fish that have been boiled.

Vegetables that are added to this type of soup can make it spicy or neutral. For a spicy flair, you can add dill grains, green onion, celery, chervil, parsley and tarragon. For the more neutral variety add potatoes, carrots, rutabagas, turnips and fresh cucumber.

As far as the sour milk that is included in some of these cold soups, it is natural sour milk that has been well shaken and combined with seed oil, pure water as well as ground garlic. You can often replace the sour milk and use kefir instead, but many cold soup purists say that it changes the taste of the traditional okroshka.

To conclude, if you want to really experience the country's cuisine, you need to eat the many varieties of Russian soup that are available with every meal. You can be rest assured that almost every meal that you eat will include some form of soup. It's the way of traditional cuisine and is very good for you to boot.

By

Photo: cookandbemerry.com

The salad recipes in this article are perfect for diabetics. But that doesn't mean they are not tasty for others as well! You can serve these salads to the whole group. Everyone will have a tasty salad and the diabetics will be safe enjoying them, too! The Ginger Noodle Salad is a great salad that uses pasta in a unique way and has a Chinese flavored dressing. The Broccoli Salad uses golden raisins combined with broccoli, bacon, and sunflower seeds for a wonderfully different salad. If you are looking for a good homemade dressing for your favorite green salad, try this Homemade Celery Seed one.
GINGER NOODLE SALAD
4 oz dry whole-wheat spaghetti or linguine
Cook pasta according to the package directions. Toss with the dressing below:
NOODLE DRESSING:
1 tbsp minced ginger
3 tbsp Splenda granular
1 tbsp catsup
1/4 cup lite soy sauce
1/4 tsp Chinese chile paste*
1 tbsp water
2 tbsp lime juice
1 tsp canola oil
2 cups mixed salad greens
4 lime wedges for garnish, if desired
In a medium saucepan combine the ginger, Splenda, catsup, soy sauce, chili paste, and water. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat and simmer for 1 minute. Remove from the heat then add the canola oil and lime juice. Using a wire whisk, blend well.
Add the cooked and drained noodles to the dressing and stir in well to coat.
To serve, divide the salad greens evenly among 4 salad plates. Top with the noodles. Garnish each with a lime wedge, if desired.
*If you don't have the Chinese chili paste, substitute a small amount of crushed red pepper to taste.
BROCCOLI RAISIN SALAD
1 bunch fresh broccoli, broken into florets
1/2 cup golden raisins (omit if necessary)
1 small red onion, chopped
1/2 cup fat-free mayonnaise (not salad dressing-too sweet)
1 tbsp vinegar
2 tsp Splenda granular
3 strips cooked bacon, broken into bite-sized pieces
2 tbsp toasted sunflower seeds
Combine the broccoli florets, raisins-if using, and onion in a large bowl.
In a small bowl combine the mayonnaise, vinegar, and Splenda until well blended. Pour the dressing over the broccoli, toss to coat, and refrigerate until serving time. Before serving, toss gently and sprinkle with the bacon pieces and sunflower seeds.
HOMEMADE CELERY SEED DRESSING
1 garlic clove
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp lemon juice
1/3 cup olive or canola oil
1/2 tsp celery seed
3/4 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp Splenda Granulated
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 small jar with a lid. A jelly jar works well.
In a jar mash the garlic clove with the salt. Add the lemon juice, oil, celery seed, mustard, paprika, Splenda, and black pepper. Place lid on jar and shake well to blend.
Refrigerate.
Shake well before using on your favorite salad.
Yield: 1/2 cup
Enjoy!

Recipe for Flourless Mug Bread

By

Photo: 4.bp.blogspot.com

Have you heard about the health benefits of flax, but don't know how to add it to your diet? Do you love bread but not the spike your blood sugar takes from breads made of flour? Tired of buying large loaves of bread when you want it to be fresh all the time? If you've answered yes to any of these questions, this recipe is for you! It's really too good to be true. I have to admit, I saw a recipe similar to this online and wondered:
1. Could I make it really healthy? and
2. Would it taste any good?
This is one you just have to try to believe. Don't let the ingredients scare you off. This is bread and it's quick, easy, cheap, and full of important nutrition. This recipe substitutes flaxseed meal for flour. Flaxseed is rich in those elusive omega-3 fatty acids which fight inflammation in your body. It's high in most of the B vitamins, magnesium, and manganese, fiber, and antioxidants. This bread will not spike your blood sugar and will fill you up. Best of all, this bread tastes great! I just made this, and topped it with a bit of almond butter - delicious!
FLOURLESS MUG BREAD
¼ cup ground flaxseed meal
½ teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 large egg
1 tablespoon unsweetened applesauce
Put the flaxseed meal, baking powder, and cinnamon into a microwave-safe mug. Stir together until well mixed. Add the egg and applesauce. Mix until smooth. Microwave 2 minutes. Allow bread to cool slightly and remove from the mug.
NUTRITION PER SERVING (1 serving)
calories = 226
saturated fat = 1.6 g
sodium = 83 mg
fiber = 9.5 g
protein = 12.4 g
VERSATILITY
You can substitute the egg with egg substitute.
Add mashed banana, zucchini, oats, dried fruits, nuts, cocoa powder.
Try slicing and toasting the bread.
COST
I actually had all these ingredients in my kitchen, but I estimate this recipe would cost about 50 cents per serving.

The Custardy Caramel Mexican Dessert - Flan

By:

Photo: circletimekids.com

The elegant, sumptuous vanilla-infused custard with asweet caramel top layer is absolutely an ultimate dessert to finish off a meal. The coconut version of the flan, as telecasted on a food show of my HD television connected to Dish TV Offers tempted me to make the original classic Mexican dessert that has been passed on from generations to the family. This simple creamy custard dessert serves as a finest portion of a meal and is a favorite among those who has a sweet tooth. Flan is a slow cooked dish and is normally made with whole eggs, cream or milk with a caramel coating and appropriated flavorings that includes vanilla, almonds, pistachio, lemon, pumpkin and various other fruits. The various flavors relate to the creation of different types of flans like Asparagus Flan, Sweet Potato Flan, Coffee Flan, Chocolate Flan, Cheese Flan and Sweet Corn Flan and other fruit flavored ones.

A coffee flan is a great variation of the Spanish flan and a cheese flan is similar to cheesecake but has a more refined texture. Mexican flan is very similar to the original Spanish flan recipe but with a hint of chocolate and vanilla. The English custard flan has a unique crust but is otherwise similar to the Spanish style flan. Flan is very simple dessert and easy to make and there is nothing like devouring a tasty, delicious flan that indulges you into a sweet world.

Though it is a popular dessert in Spain and Mexico, where it is a staple dessert and is famous in the kitchens of the rich and the poor, its origin can be traced to the ancient Rome. It's believed that, in Rome, the abundant and surplus food commodities like eggs and with the infusion of Greek's knowledge of the art of cooking led to the creation of a custardy concoction known as flan. Originally a savory dish like an eel flan, it was later concocted into a very nice sweet flan with honey flavor. Unlike in Rome where the citrus and almond flavor became a hit, in Spain it became sweet custard generally made with caramelized sugar. With the discovery of Central and South America, the richness of the flan was introduced to the people by Christopher Columbus who brought the delicious dessert to these lands which underwent various twists in its various custardy forms. In the European region, it was famous as a crusty dessert, with their love for pastry crusts. This one makes use of a pastry shell with an open top filled with custard and often mixed with nuts or fruit. This simple economic dessert appeals to all classes and masses without any distinction.

The key success to any recipe is to follow exact and precise measurements and paying attention to all the details as in the case of flan. Read on below for the recipe of this delectable treat. All you need to make a delicious flan is a tart mould or a tart pan or molds fitted with a lid that clips on securely. First pre-heat your oven to 325 degree and then start to assemble the ingredients. Prepare the caramel by adding one cup of sugar into the pan and stir until the sugar turns brown into caramel. Add this to your baking tart pan or mould. For the custard blend six large eggs and 4-ounce can sweeten condensed milk and 2 13-ounce cans evaporated milk, slowly incorporating half-a-cup of sugar and then vanilla into a smooth mixture. Transfer the custard to the mould, place it in a baking dish filled with water and bake for 45 minutes. Enjoy your custardy caramel dessert!

Sourdough Bread From Scratch at Home

By

Photo: pinchmysalt.com

Sourdough bread is different from normal bread. It is more nutritious and since the sourdough starter can reduce down the gluten, some people who are glucose intolerant can eat sourdough bread made from wheat flour. Another big advantage of making sourdough bread machine recipes is that it can be stored for a long period of time. Here is a simple sourdough bread machine recipe that you can prepare from scratch and enjoy at home.
What you will need:
- Bread machine flour or wheat flour - 3 ½ cups
- Granulated sugar - 2 tablespoons
- Active bread machine yeast - 2 ¼ teaspoons
- Salt - 2 teaspoons (this regulates the rising of the bread)
- Warm fresh milk - ¾ cups
- Butter (softened) - 1 ½ tablespoons
- Homemade sourdough starter - 1 cup (recipe given below)
To prepare:
- Clean out your bread machine and check the settings. Mark the settings on basic bread cycle and the type of crust you like for your bread.
- In the clean bread pan, mix 1 cup of the flour, sugar, salt and yeast (do not use the warming cycle).
- While the cycle is still running, slowly add the milk and softened butter.
- While the machine is still running, add the sourdough starter.
- Now add the rest of the flour (do not mix) and close the lid of the bread pan, then let the machine run for its full cycle.
- Once the bread is done, let it cool on a wire rack before serving.
Sourdough starter: The sourdough starter needs to be at least a week old before use. Since it does not go bad, it can be stored in the fridge. Given below is a simple recipe for sourdough starter to make at home.
What you will need:
- All-purpose flour - 2 cups
- Sugar - 2 teaspoons
- Dry active yeast - 1 packet
- Warm water - 1 cup (115F)
Preparation:
- Mix the yeast with warm water and let it rest for some time until you get a frothy liquid.
- You will need a deep glass jar to keep the mix in as the starter rises with time.
- In the jar, mix the flour and sugar and whisk in the yeast.
- Cover the jar with a cheesecloth or a cling sheet and let it ferment at least overnight.
- Stir the starter at least 3 times daily and you will know it is ready to use when the bubbling stops.
- You can keep the starter in the fridge when it starts fermenting.
- Before using the starter, measure out one cup and let it come to room temperature before using.
- Sourdough bread's sourness will depend on the days of fermentation and the temperature of the starter.
This bread can be served with soups, salads and gravy dishes.

Easy to Prepare Italian Sausage Bread

By

Photo: farm3.static.flickr.com

Giving a different twist to the traditional combination of sausages and bread, here is a mouth-watering Italian sausage bread recipe that you can prepare at home. This bread recipe uses prepared pizza dough, but if you have more time on your hands you can prepare the bread dough as well.
On your shopping list, you will need:
One regular pizza dough
1/2 kg of Italian sausages
1 teaspoon, or about 5 grams, of red chili flakes
5 grams of diced parsley leaves
5 grams of diced thyme leaves
150 grams of chopped onions (1 cup)
10 grams of yellow cornmeal
5 grams of chopped garlic
350 grams of grated mozzarella cheese
1 normal egg
2 tablespoons of water
5 ml of olive oil
Salt to taste
Prepare your oven before cooking the stuffing:
Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Take an 8x12 inch baking pan and bread sheet, and dust half of the cornmeal inside it.
To prepare the stuffing:
In a non-stick pan, heat the olive oil on medium heat (you could use regular refined oil, but Italian and olive oil sort of go together).
Put the sausages in the pan and let them cook for some time so that they are cooked from the inside and brown on the top. Keep turning in between to let them cook evenly.
Add the onions and let them cook for a few minutes until they are soft and translucent.
Add chopped garlic and let it cook for a few minutes.
Add the chopped thyme and parsley leaves to the mix and let them cook for a minute.
Add some salt and mix well so that the sausages are coated with herbs.
Add the red chili flakes, mix and take the mix off the heat.
Let the mix cool before using.
For the bread loaf:
Thaw the pizza dough.
Sprinkle the remaining cornmeal on a flat surface and knead the dough over it to a 10x14 inch rectangle.
Mix the egg with water.
Use this mix to brush the sides of the dough (one inch on each side).
Sprinkle half of the mozzarella cheese on the prepared dough.
Spread the sausage and herb mix on the cheese and sprinkle the rest of the cheese over it.
Roll the dough over the mix in a jelly roll style and seal the edges well.
Brush some of the egg white on top.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes until the top crust is glossy golden brown.
Cool on a wire rack and cut in slices to serve.
You can serve this bread with butter, salsa and even as a side dish with gravy.

Make Your Own Soda - How To Make Soda

By

Photo: i2.cdn.turner.com

Can you Make Your Own Soda, and save money at the same time? Absolutely! Did you know that it's really simple to make your own beverages at home? Just like with anything new there will be a slight learning curve as you learn which flavor combinations work best or how much of a particular ingredient you will need. Have fun with it, make healthier drinks, make fun flavors, and cut back on plastic and aluminum usage a little in the process. Are you ready?
Why Make Your Own Soda?
As you may already know brand name sodas are packed with calories and tons of high fructose corn syrup which is kind of unhealthy for you. In addition here are some other great reasons to Make Your Own Soda:
- Less usage of plastic bottles and aluminum cans
- Complete control over ingredients
- Many different flavor combinations
- You can use "Real" fruit instead of artificial flavors
- Ability to control the taste
- And much more
Last but certainly not least it's just downright fun to make your own soda creations. Drinking the same old boring name brands gets old. Do you remember when the gourmet soda company Jones Soda came out with a flavor called "Turkey & Gravy'? Yes now you can create the next crazy flavor
It Can't Be That Easy...Right?
When it comes to soda there are undoubtedly many flavors on the market, If you have ever watched one of those shows about "how things are made" and caught the one about the soda factory you will probably believe that only major corporations can churn out great tasting soda. Even though there are literally hundreds of different flavors of soda the truth is that most sodas share the same core parts of carbonation, flavor and sweetness. That's it really. Of course how great your soda will taste will depend on what method you use, and a few other factors such as how fizzy (carbonated) you like your water and how flavorful you like your soda.
Gettin "Fizzy" with it!
In order to have a great tasting soda you will need carbonation. To keep it simple there are two ways to achieve carbonation that won't break the bank. The first option is to simply buy a bottle of seltzer water from your local grocery store and mix it with your chosen ingredients. It can't get any simpler than that. With that said this method can add up over time. If you plan on making soda more consistently you may be better off utilizing a machine that can carbonate your plain tap water instead. You can also carbonate with dry ice, but we don't recommend this method as it can be very dangerous if not done properly.
Here Comes The Brand New "Flavor" In Your Root Beer
Ok so now that you have your carbonation method it's time to start thinking about different ways to flavor your carbonated water. First start with a simple syrup mixture consisting of one part water and one part sugar. You can then add at least two parts of your flavoring or more depending on your desired taste. Heat this combo up until it starts to boil then turn the heat off. Let this sit for about 30 minutes then transfer to another container and stick it in your refrigerator. As far as the ratio of carbonated water to flavoring you will have to decide by taste but 2-3 ounces of syrup to 12 ounces of carbonated water is a good place to start. The key here is to experiment with different flavor combinations and see what you can come up with. Make it fun, and who knows maybe you will come up with the next great soda flavor.
If you would prefer to have someone else be the mixologist then you can try using a premade flavor instead. This will shorten the learning curve and you can certainly still experiment and come up with many different recipes.
Just to give you an idea of what you can do with premade flavors here are a couple of recipes that you can create using SodaStream SodaMix flavors to get you going in the right direction:
Shirley Temple
8 oz. SodaStream Ginger Ale
1 1/2 oz. Grenadine or maraschino cherry juice
Maraschino cherries
Pour Grenadine or cherry juice over ice. Add Ginger Ale and serve with a cherry on top!
Berry Dream
4 oz. SodaStream Cranberry-Raspberry
2 oz. Light cream
1/4 cup Strawberries, raspberries or blueberries in syrup
1 cup ice
In a blender, puree ice, cream and berries until smooth and creamy
Pour into a cup and stir in soda
Extra special treat: Serve in a martini glass, garnished with a sprig of mint and fresh berries.
This is just the tip of the iceberg! You can make many more tasty drink recipes and the possibilities are truly endless. Whether you make your own flavors or opt for premade flavors learning to Make Your Own Soda will be fun, good for the environment, and very yummy for your tummy. Cheers!
Don't risk an explosion with Dry Ice! Forget about the expensive recurring cost of Seltzer Water. Learn how to carbonate your water in less than 30 seconds the "Easy" way. Improve Your Baking With The Right Baking Substitutes

By:

Photo: cookingforengineers.com

Sometimes you will find it necessary, when you are cooking or baking, to substitute one ingredient for another. These baking substitutes can be very useful and can help save your recipe if you are lacking an ingredient, or if you want to substitute an ingredient for taste or health purposes. Before you use any baking substitutes, like the ones described below, test the taste yourself and make sure it will be appropriate in your recipe. These substitutes may change the taste or the texture of the baking, so you should use them with care. The following baking substitutes are suitable for your baking recipes, and you can try them out when you are baking your next cake, bread or dessert.

If you are told to use an envelope of yeast, you can substitute this for one cube of fresh yeast. One tablespoon of corn starch may be exchanged for two tablespoons of flour this is used for thickening, and the extra bulk of the flour helps to carry out corn starchs thickening role. If you dont have any self raising flour, use one cup or all-purpose flour and add one teaspoon of baking powder to give the rising effect. Add a pinch of salt as well. If you need to use buttermilk or sour milk, use regular milk with a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar. If you are stuck without baking chocolate, use three tablespoons of cocoa along with one tablespoon of oil or some melted shortening. To make your own almond paste, use one cup of sliced almonds blended with a tablespoon of granulated sugar toast the almonds first for a better taste. Bread crumbs could be replaced by crushed cracker crumbs, or crushed cornflakes, or even ground oats. For brewed coffee substitute instant espresso power dissolved in hot water (dont use much hot water, make a thick paste.) For clotted cream you can use mascarpone cheese and for heavy whipping cream use a smaller quantity of whipping cream plus buttermilk or yogurt. If you havent got vanilla extract you can use other extracts such as lemon, orange or almond. For ghee, try clarified butter and for ginger root you can try ground dried ginger plus lemon juice. Of course, you can also substitute fresh herbs and fresh peel for dried herbs and peel. This may make the recipe taste different, so be aware of this before you make the substitution.

How can you determine which of these choices satisfy your learning style?

Below are several popular methods people utilize in learning the skill of cooking. They teach individuals different levels of food preparation. Combining these items may help you learn faster and enable you to turn into a better cook.

Cookery Demonstrations

Our planet's best chefs tour different countries and give various cookery demonstrations to eager audiences. Their audience are homemakers and beginners who currently have basic kitchen skills. You can enjoy when they start to prepare easy dishes while explaining the procedure step-by-step. They will ask select members of the crowd to try making the dish alongside them if they're teaching bigger groups. Smaller groups will get to attempt making the dish alongside these chefs themselves.

What makes these demonstrations popular is that you get personal interaction with an expert and see how to make a particular dish firsthand. Additionally, they give tips and suggestions on ingredients, cooking strategies and pairing options during the session. These courses are readily available as they often come as promotional programs for several products. In case you already have a basic working familiarity with kitchen skills and want to study new recipes, it is the perfect chance for you.

Culinary Schools

People who attend culinary schools don't automatically desire to be chefs. Formal cooking institutions offer basic classes for those who are just setting out to explore the kitchen. They offer an arranged program where you will find out different skills in a given period. You will begin with knife skills and basic cooking techniques to recognizing ingredients and their flavours before moving forward to creating different dishes.

Most people choose this since they receive training from expert chefs. The combination of hands-on experience and classroom lectures lets you master the basic principles under the guidance of chef instructors. You'll also have your classmates for support. They will help you take a look at lessons and exercise your skills. Together, you'll be able to exchange ideas on dishes and learn new dishes from each others' cooking experiences. This is well suited for those who want a more structured method and those who learn faster with a support group.

Personal Chef Service

Individuals who have the resources go with personal chef service. You can actually hire chefs not only to cook for you, but to teach you how as well. You'll work with your very own chef one-on-one. The chef will offer his undivided attention and answer all your questions as you learn skills at your own pace. There aren't any structures and schedules for these sessions since you also dictate these factors. You can demand your own chef or set your very own time. You can also choose specific skills you would like to gain. Busy people and those who learn faster in hands-on sessions will benefit from this method.

Mediterranean Gazpacho Soup

 By

Photo: rawfoodnation.org

Gazpacho originated in southern Spain. It is a cold soup and requires no cooking. Moreover, it is cholesterol free, low in calories and high in vitamin C.
The main ingredient of Gazpacho is tomato, which grows in abundance in southern Spain. But as you might imagine, being Spanish in origin, it also contains onions, garlic and olive oil. Again, these are readily available and, of course, inexpensive.
Tomatoes provide the sweetness, as well has being high in vitamin C, and paprika gives the soup a bit of spice.
The ingredients are:
25 g fresh breadcrumbs
2-3 tablespoons virgin olive oil
1/4 teaspoon paprika
225 g tomatoes
3 spring onions
small clove of garlic
1/4 of a large cucumber
1/2 red pepper
1/2 yellow pepper
Juice of a lime
450ml tomato juice
salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method: Boil 150 ml water and add to it the breadcrumbs, oil and paprika in a bowl. Remove the skins from the tomatoes by dipping them in hot water. Cut the tomatoes in half so that you can remove and discard the seeds. Then chop the flesh. Trim and dice the spring onions, and peel the garlic and cucumber. The peppers should also be diced. Keep back some of the diced vegetables to place in the middle of the soup when it is ready to be served.
Blend together until fairly smooth the mixture of breadcrumbs, cucumber, peppers, onions and garlic. Stir in the lime juice. Then add this mixture to the tomato juice and chopped tomatoes, season and chill for at least an hour.
There are different ways of making Gazpacho and this is likely to vary from region to region. I suspect this recipe is quite a modern variation on traditional ones as I have had Gazpacho in Marbella on the south coast of Spain and I am certain there was no bread in it. Nevertheless, this is a tasty, healthy and inexpensive dish with plenty of vitamin C, not only from the tomatoes but the peppers too. Red and yellow peppers contain four times as much vitamin C as oranges. Garlic is good for many things including the immune system and circulation, infections and so on.
As regards where the word Gazpacho comes from, this is more vague. I once read it was to do with "edible treasures" but apparently it comes from the pre-Roman Mozarab word caspa, which means "fragments" or "flakes", as in small pieces of bread.
